The Heat Treatment of Large Dies Involves Risks

08/11/2022
Large die casting dies are often characterized by large cross-sectional differences.
Risks:
  • Different heating rates of the various cross sections => different soaking times of these areas at
hardening temperature. This results in the risk that thin-walled cross sections are overtimes
(coarse grain, embrittlement).
  • Different quenching rates in the different cross sections (=> risk of cracking, insufficient
microstructure)
