Casting technology for large structural components has the characteristics of increased casting temperature, high flow rates, small quantity spray cooling and increased use of spot cooling.

However, in die casting dies, a complex stress state builds up in the course of the casting operation. The greater the cross-sectional differences within a die insert, the more pronounced the temperature differences and thus the thermal stresses in the die insert. In the case of large components, this results in particular:

1)    Greater risk of washout and thermal shock cracking

2)    Even higher thermal and mechanical stress

3)    Increase in die temperature


In order to ensure the safe operation of the dies, it is recommended to increase the toughness by lowering the hardness. But the strength of the steel decreases automatically, resulting in weakening of the die. Using a hot-work tool steel with increased toughness potential, e.g. TQ1 could issue this problem.
